From Music Classroom Management to Facilitation Workshop Description

Moving from a teacher centered approach of teaching to learner centered requires educators to give up control so that they can share it with learners to cultivate a sense of belonging and ownership in the learning environment. However, many strategies for music classroom management focus on teacher control.

In this workshop, K-12 music educators will explore moving away from music classroom management and towards music classroom facilitation so that you can be clear on how to work in co-partnership with your music learners and ensure a music learning environment that is affirming, culturally responsive, and leads to learners developing a sense of belonging in the music program.

Workshop Objectives

Participants will:

1. Know how classroom management is different from classroom facilitation.

2. Understand how working in partnership with music learners helps to foster self-management skills learners can use while learning.

3. Be able to develop a classroom facilitation plan that intentionally leverages learner culture to co-create routines, procedures, and classroom culture so that music educators can cultivate a positive and affirming music learning environment.

Workshop Resources

Included with registration, all participants will receive:

  • Participant Workbook
  • Additional Resources list
  • PD Certificate for 3 hours
  • Access to workshop recording for 30 days after the conclusion of the workshop

Feedback from workshop participants:

It gave me a good framework for rethinking how I connect and develop relationships with my students. If they know I value them as a human and their culture and experiences, they’ll be more likely to value what I’m sharing with them more too.” – Music Educator, Virginia

“My biggest takeaway is how we can actively work to make our students feel at home in our music room.” – Music Educator, Virginia
