Cultural Proficiency for Music Educators Workshop Description

Our actions, behaviors, values, and beliefs are affected by our own culture. As such, it is vitally important that K-12 music educators, who work with learners from all backgrounds and abilities, are skilled in cultural proficiency so that they can meaningfully connect and engage with their learners.

In this workshop, K-12 music educators will explore the cultural proficiency continuum through the explicit lens of music education so that you can be clear on where along the continuum your skills currently are, and what steps you can take to advance so that you can ensure you are making inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive instructional decisions that promote belonging for all of your learners.

Workshop Objectives

Participants will:

1. Know the stages of the cultural proficiency continuum

2. Understand key indicators of each stage of the cultural proficiency continuum and specific examples in music education.

3. Be able to identify where you currently are on the continuum, and specific next steps you can take to advance so you can improve your relationships with your learners and gain confidence that you can build an inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive culture in your music program.

Workshop Resources

Included with registration, all participants will receive:

  • Participant Workbook
  • Additional Resources list
  • PD Certificate for 3 hours
  • Access to workshop recording for 30 days after the conclusion of the workshop
