Introduction to Culturally Responsive Music Education

Introduction to Culturally Responsive Music Education Workshop Description

The importance of culturally responsive teaching is undeniable, however many music educators report feeling unprepared to utilize culturally responsive practices citing uncertainty about how it can be applied in the music education context.

Through a mix of storytelling from the facilitator’s own time as a K-12 music educator, discussion, and hands-on lesson demonstration in this workshop, K-12 music educators explore the pillars of our proprietary framework for Culturally Responsive Music Education in order to gain clarity about the culturally responsive approach in the K-12 music context.

Workshop Objectives

Participants will:

1. Know 3 specific reasons why culturally responsive teaching in the music contexts isn’t about using diverse repertoire so they can move past surface level knowledge of culturally responsive pedagogy and gain clarity.

2. Understand several key components and principles of Culturally Responsive Music Education

3. Be able to identify three shifts they can begin to make in their music programs immediately whether they teach kindergarten general music, or high school band, in order to ensure high quality instruction for all learners.

  • Participant Workbook (including lesson/rehearsal plan examples)
  • Additional Resources list
  • PD Certificate for 4 hours
