Make Music matter. Fundamentals of Culturally responsive music curriculum design

January 26-28th, 2023 online

Registration now open! Register by Wednesday, December 7th for early bird pricing and a bonus workshop!

Before we can focus on specific music concepts, skills, and techniques, our young musicians must first have a ‘why.’

Our students need to feel connected to the music, feel a sense of belonging, and be engaged by the musical experiences beyond the “notes on the page.”

The question then becomes: how do we foster these connections in our rehearsals and lessons?

The answer: intentionally embedding culturally responsive and equitable pedagogical practices into our music curriculum design.

As music educators, our time with our students is short and jam-packed. Between preparing for performances, only seeing students a few times a week, and all the administrative things that come along with being a music educator, it can feel like culturally responsive teaching is an add-on.

But really, culturally responsive music curriculum design is what allows us to help students make the connections they need so that the music matters to them. Making the music matter to students is key to healthy, thriving music programs where students can find a sense of belonging while also achieving high levels of musicianship.

So actually, culturally responsive music curriculum design isn’t an add-on, or an extra thing to “do,” it’s at the very center of a high quality music program.

Culturally responsive music curricula where students feel connected, that they belong, and they are engaged in real-life contexts of music making, that’s what allows us to better attract, engage, and retain students in our music programs.

If you are…

  • A K-12 music educator or Fine Arts Supervisor looking for ways to better attract, engage, and retain students in your music program
  • Ready to move beyond talk and theory to implementation of culturally responsive & equitable approaches
  • Looking to transform your music curriculum so that it better engages all of your young musicians
